Charities and not-for-profits run on the kindness, and hard work of women.
Women disproportionately fill fundraising and communications roles, drive volunteering, deliver services with compassion — and are more likley to be the of services. Yet the rooms where key decisions get made often don't look like them.
Her Kind was built to change that balance.
Her Kind is led by female directors, backed by a collective of skilled women and men — because good allies are key for change. So whatever your organisation looks like, the people doing the work, and the people it's for, can have a stronger voice in it.
The sector is often told that being kind and being rigorous are opposites — that warmth belongs in the appeal and hard numbers belong in the board pack. Compassion without rigour is sentimental. Rigour without compassion is useless here. We do both, in the same conversation.
The sector is full of extraordinary stories told in unremarkable ways. Bold brands and campaigns are not a luxury for charities — they are how you cut through, build trust and move people to give, volunteer and advocate. Playing it safe is the riskiest thing a purposeled organisation can do.
Fundraising is not begging. It is giving people the opportunity to show kindness, by inviting them into work that matters. An organisation one grant round away from crisis cannot serve anyone well. We treat income as a moral question and we never apologise for talking about money plainly.
Women do most of this work and are most often affected by it. Her Kind is women-led by ownership and by design, and the collective is open to anyone who is good at this and shares the mission.
Your knowledge of your community leads. We bring the frameworks, the experience and the outside eye.
The answer usually already lives inside the organisation. Our first job is to find it. Advice comes second, and it comes with our reasoning attached so you can disagree with it. Anyone who arrives with the answer has stopped listening before they started.
Most reviews arrive looking for what is broken. You already know what is broken. We look for where the energy already is, what this organisation does better than anyone else, and what you would protect at all costs. Then we build from there.
We say the difficult thing, kindly. Warmth is not softness. If the model does not stack up, if the board is not functioning, if the strategy is a wish list — we will say so. Clearly, once, and with what we would do about it. Candour is a form of respect.
Every engagement should transfer something: a framework your team can run again without us, language they can use, a conversation they can now have on their own. If you call us again, we would like it to be because you chose to.
The beliefs say what we stand for. Our workplace ethos says what it is like to have us in the room — and also what a collaborator agrees to when they take a Her Kind project.
Our practice starts with asking, not telling. What is the question you are actually trying to answer? When has this organisation been at its best? What are you avoiding? What would you stop, if stopping were allowed?
A no obligation conversation, is the best way to help us understand you
and your organisation, and is always our starting point.
